Life and Debt Documentary DVD

LIFE AND DEBT DOCUMENTARY DVD- Jamaican DVD Movie

A Must See Movie About Jamaica.

Set to a beguiling reggae beat, Life and Debt takes as its subject Jamaica's economic decline in the 20th century.
The story has reverberations in the plight of other third-world nations blindsided by globalization, like Ghana and Haiti.
After England granted Jamaica independence in 1962, the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) stepped in with a series of loans.
These loans came with strings attached--the kind that would eventually plunge the country $7 billion into debt, stranded without the resources to dig themselves out.
Although IMF officials get the chance to have their say, it's clear where filmmaker Stephanie Black's sympathies lie--with the country's underemployed farmers and sweatshop workers.
Jamaica Kinkaid (A Small Place) penned the narration, while the soundtrack features some of the "imports" with which this island nation remains mostly closely associated:
Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Mutabaruka, who performs the title track.

Rent A Rasta DVD - Documentary - FREE SHIPPING!

Rent A Rasta DVD - Sex Tourism, a product of slavery, is not new to the Caribbean

Three flights are due into Montego Bay, one from Toronto, one from Fort Lauderdale, the other from London. When white women flock to Jamaica for a little fun in the sun, the R&R they're often looking for is not "Rest and Relaxation" but to "Rent a Rasta" according to director J. Michael Seyfert. His eye-opening expose' of the same name sheds light on a barely acknowledged form of sex tourism, namely, white women who visit the Caribbean Islands to get their groove back with the help of black locals. This documentary claims that, each year, as many as 80,000 females from a variety of relatively-wealthy Western nations descend on Jamaica alone.

Although most of Black History is suppressed, distorted and ignored by an ungrateful modern world, some African traditions are so persistent that all of the power and deception of the blond and blue eyed establishment failed to stamp them out. Many return regularly from the Caribbean sporting dreadlocks, bringing money and gifts like jewelry and designer sneakers, a practice called renta a rasta.

*********
j. michael seyfert best director award atlanta docu festival

Most of those inclined to indulge their Island Fever with wanton abandon are apparently middle-aged and/or overweight spinsters. Ignored by white men, and afraid to date blacks openly due to the social taboo, they look for satisfaction at remote resorts amidst the anonymity offered by a virtual paradise. These decadent dames safely lure their boy toys with money, electronic gadgets, designer clothes, baubles, or whatever material item it takes to get uncomplicated sexual favors in return along with the strict understanding that like in Las Vegas, "What happens in Jamaica, stays in Jamaica." As one satisfied customer, a 45 year-old spinster from the Midwest explains her addiction to her hedonistic getaway, "A girl who no one looks at twice gets hit on all the time here. All these guys are paying her attention, telling her she's really beautiful, and they really want her. It is like a secret, a fantasy, and then you go home." While this glimpse of the lucky ladies' rationale for their no-strings liaisons is certainly informative, the picture is actually far more interesting when chronicling the history of Jamaica, winding its way from the slave days through the rise of the Rastafari to the present. Framed from this perspective, we suddenly see a persistent pattern of utter subjugation and economic inequality, with islanders providing stud service only being the latest form of exploitation.

*********

Perhaps most telling is the desperate summation of a suffering black woman seen begging for an end to the Jamaican people's neverending cycle of poverty. She wants, "the white world to come give us our deliverance, because it was them who take us out of our land and carry us here." Viewed in this light, Rent a Rasta is a clarion call which establishes that sex tourism is not merely the harmless indulgence of horny white women gone wild, but a burgeoning trend which continues to wreak havoc on a Caribbean culture and family structure already in crisis.

Bob Marley - I Shot the Sheriff DVD Movie

The documentary Bob Marley: I Shot the Sheriff traces the creation and impact of the song, one of many that helped make Marley the most recognizable and popular reggae artists in the world. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

From The Impact Series, Songs That Changed The World: featuring Bob Marley: I Shot The Sheriff became a direct response to political oppression.
Black and Gold - The Story Of The Latin Kings

Black and Gold - The Story Of The Latin Kings

"Black and Gold offers a potent portrait of bootstraps idealism in an embattled community ... this energetically packaged documentary deserves to be seen." -Dennis Harvey, VARIETY

Description:

In 1994, the Latin Kings - the largest and most powerful street gang in New York - became the Latin King and Queen Nation. They claimed to have abandoned their criminal past and to be following in the footsteps of the Black Panthers and the Young Lords. With over 3,000 members in New York, some saw the Latin King and Queen Nation as the most important political voice to rise from the streets in decades. The NYPD did not agree, calling them a vicious gang with a PR campaign. One thing is certain, the City was never the same after the Nation went downtown. In 1997 Big Noise films became the only media group ever given unrestricted access to the Nation. For two years they ran with the Kings and Queens in New York City, filming on the front lines of their everyday struggle for survival. 'Black and Gold' explores a reality that is too often reduced to a stereotype or a slogan. Its unblinking lens puts you at the center of a complex and controversial movement. The Nation was one of the major forces that made police violence and the prison system political issues in New York City. But from the beginning the NYPD has questioned the sincerity of the Nation's political involvement, and has systematically worked to dismantle what they see as the most dangerous street gang in the City. Their efforts culminated in a spectacular midnight raid on May 15, 1998 when over 1,000 Federal and City agents simultaneously raided homes across the city making over 100 arrests in what was the largest coordinated FBI action since prohibition. 'Black and Gold' lets you feel the tension inside the movement as it comes under fire from midnight police raids and assassination attempts. In the end it shows us both the black and the gold - both the fear and violence of the street and the fierce love inside the most dangerous movement in the City.

Track Listing/Features:

Bonus Materials:

Full length interviews with King Tone and Puerto Rican revolutionary Richie Perez.

Other Info:

Label:

BIG NOISE FILMS

Genre:

Documentary

Running Time:

86 mins

Region Code:

0

# of Discs:

1

Producers:

Big Noise Films

Rockers - 25th Anniversary Reggae DVD

Rockers - 25th Anniversary Reggae DVD

Writer-director Theodoros Bafaloukos responded to Jamaica's siren call all the way over in Greece and came to the island to make this 1977 movie about a band of Rasta men/Robin Hoods getting their own back at the expense of those perennial bloodsuckers, the "uptown top rankings," as men of money and position are called in Jamaica. The reggae star-studded cast is undoubtedly the movie's most rewarding feature, though some reggae fans have objected to the demeaning sight of the incomparable late singer Jacob Miller threatening a friend with a knife over a purloined chicken leg or the equally great singer Gregory Isaacs exacting chump change for unlocking a tourist's rental car. However, these and other great reggae figures are also seen here in full and glorious performance at their peak. In fact, this film provides our only extended visual record of Miller's kinetic performance style and one of the best pieces of footage on Isaacs. Although Rockers doesn't approach the multilayered complexity of The Harder They Come and it does betray a little superiority now and then to its characters, there are plenty of laughs as well as insights into life at the time for Jamaica's growing Rastafarian movement. Drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace makes an unlikely though quintessentially Jamaican leading man as he moves between wooing the rich man's virginal daughter and making pit stops at the shack he shares with his wife and children. His band of accomplices is priceless, and the scene in which each struts in his own "stylee" to Peter Tosh's "Stepping Razor" is alone worth the price. --Elena Oumano
