Grooving Kingston 12 - Bob Marley 3 CD Set (Jad Masters 1970-1972)

Grooving Kingston 12 - Bob Marley 3 CD Set - Jad Masters 1970-1972

This is an attractive three-disc box set of material that Bob Marley & the Wailers recorded in the early '70s.
Grooving Kingston 12 does has liner notes and musician credits, which is a rarity with most pre-Island releases of Marley material.
The first disc collects early Jamaican singles released on the Wailers' own Tuff Gong label, along with the usual instrumental versions and DJ toasts.
These are rough and raw recordings, full of a kind of nascent charm, with dominant horn arrangements.
The second disc features some of the best work the Wailers ever did.
Working with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry at Randy's in Kingston, the Wailers recorded the songs that would make up the Trojan LPs Soul Rebels and African Herbsman, releases that redefined the direction and future of reggae.
The final disc collects song demos Marley recorded for Danny Sims and Johnny Nash in Europe in 1971, along with a couple of late Tuff Gong singles, including another fine Perry track, "Sun Is Shining," and "Satisfy My Soul Babe," which points toward the kind of sound Marley would develop later at Island Records. The Sims demos are interesting for compositional and historical reasons, particularly the long solo acoustic medley Marley recorded in a hotel room in Sweden in 1971.
The rather ordinary-sounding "Music Gonna Teach (aka Music Lesson)," which has gained some luster among Marley fans simply because few people have actually heard it.

TRACK LISTING

1 DISC ONE

2 CONCRETE JUNGLE

3 SCREW FACE

4 LIVELY UP YOURSELF

5 REDDER THAN RED

6 CRAVEN CHOKE PUPPY

7 DO GOOD

8 TRENCHTOWN ROCK

9 KINGSTON 12

10 LICK SAMBA

11 GUAVA JELLY

12 SATISFY MY SOUL JAH JAH

13 RUN FOR COVER

14 POUR DOWN THE SUNSHINE

15 SEND ME THAT LOVE

16 LOVELIGHT VERSION

17 AMMUNITION

18 FACE MAN

19 RED

20 CHOKE

21 GROOVING KINGSTON 12

22 SAMBA

23 JELLY

24 DISC TWO

25 BLACK PROGRESS

26 KAYA

27 AFRICAN HERBSMAN

28 WHO IS MR BROWN

29 MY CUP

30 DOWNPRESSOR

31 SMALL AXE

32 DREAMLAND

33 FUSSIN & FIGHTING

34 KEEP ON MOVING

35 SECOND HAND

36 ALL IN ONE

37 BLACK PROGRESS VERSION

38 KAYA VERSION

39 AFRICAN HERBSMAN VERSION

40 DRACULAR

41 DOWNPRESSOR VERSION

42 BATTLE AXE

43 DREAMLAND VERSION

44 MY CUP VERSION

45 KEEP ON MOVING VERSION

46 SECOND HAND PART 2

47 DISC 3

48 GUAVE JELLY

49 THIS TRAIN

50 CORNERSTONE

51 COMMA COMMA

52 DEWDROPS

53 STIR IT UP

54 I'M HURTING INSIDE

55 CRY TO ME

56 SUN IS SHINING

57 HEATHEN'S RAGE

58 SATISFY MY SOUL BABE

59 ROCK MY BOAT

60 I LIKE IT LIKE THIS - JONNY LOVER

61 HOLD ON TO THIS FEELING

62 ROCK TO THE ROCK

63 ROCKING STEADY

64 I'M HURTINF INSIDE

65 MUSIC GONNA TEACH

66 I'M STILL WAITING

67 BABE VERSION

68 SUN IS SHINING VERSION

69 HOLD ON TO THIS FEELING VERSION

70 MUSIC GONNA TEACH VERSION

Fy-ah, Fy-ah - Bob Marley 3 CD Box Set (JAD MASTER 1967-1970)

Fy-ah, Fy-ah - Bob Marley 3 CD Box Set (JAD MASTER 1967-1970)

All Music Guide
Despite being encased in a handsome box set featuring a 16-page booklet decorated with nice graphics, the rambling liner notes and other documentation don't give a totally clear idea of when the 68 tracks on this three-CD package were recorded, or (less forgivably) a totally clear context of how they fit into Bob Marley & the Wailers' career. It's more important to enjoy vintage reggae than to get upset about the historical details, however, and all you really need to know is that this material was cut circa 1967-1970, mostly for JAD (though there are a half-dozen sides identified as "Wail'n'Soul'm" versions, presumably indicating recordings done for their own Wail'n'Soul'm label). Most important of all, this is really first-rate early reggae music, from a juncture in the group's career that's been too ill-documented, despite having yielded much fine work. While relatively few of these songs will be familiar to many Marley/Wailers fans (an early version of "Stir It Up" and "Soul Rebel" being exceptions), it could be argued that at no other time did the band strike such an even balance between early reggae, lingering American soul influences, tender love songs, and stirring social consciousness. The production is for the most part pretty clear, and always lighter and more basic than the somewhat slicker recordings through which Bob Marley & the Wailers would rise to international stardom in the 1970s. Sometimes there's even a mild pop touch, particularly as non-Jamaican musicians (including guitarist Eric Gale, drummer Bernard Purdie, and jazzman Hugh Masekela) play on some of the cuts. Too, there's a real sense of these singers being a true group, even if Marley wrote the lion's share of the tunes, as there's so much effective give-and-take vocal harmonies among the Wailers (with Rita Marley's voice frequently heard in the mix). There are too many quality songs to specifically cite in one or two paragraphs, but "How Many Times," "Gonna Get You," "Freedom Time," "Fire Fire," "Rocking Steady," "Hypocrites," "Can't You See," and "Mr. Chatterbox" are all among the outstanding ones. As for less expected covers, you have the Archies' "Sugar Sugar," the traditional spiritual "This Train," and pretty nice American pop-influenced tunes written by JAD's Jimmy Norman and his collaborators, while emerging Rastafarianism can be heard in "Selassie Is the Chapel." Eight "versions," less essential than the fully vocalized renditions but nice for collectors to have, fill out the CDs, the last of which ends with a demo of "One Love, True Love" and a "Dub Plate Special" of "How Many Times." Richie Unterberger

Disc 1

1	Fire Fire / Bob Marley &
Legend: The Best of Bob Marley and The Wailers (Sound and Vision)

Legend: The Best Of Bob Marley and The Wailers - Sound and Vision (2CD, 1 DVD)

There's a reason why this best-of collection has been a steady bestseller since it debuted in 1984: It's got the goods. The 14 songs on Legend go a long way toward demonstrating why Marley rose to become an international superstar. The man melded potent hooks, straight-shooting sincerity, and reggae riddims into some of the most engaging pop anywhere. There's the propulsive "Could You Be Loved," the revolutionary "Get Up Stand Up," which he wrote with Peter Tosh, and the Dylanesque anthem "Redemption Song." The hit parade rolls on with Marley classics like "No Woman No Cry," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the aching love song "Waiting in Vain." Like Marley himself, these songs are truly charismatic. If you can't afford the remarkable Songs of Freedom box set, this disc captures the best of Bob. And that's pretty much the best there is.

The 2002 Deluxe Edition contains a second disc of remixes done around the original mid-'80s issue date of Legend, including the worldbeat dance mix of "Buffalo Soldier" that appeared on some versions of the original LP. Rounding out the first disc are two bonus tracks, "Easy Skanking" and "Punky Reggae Party." The entirely new repackaging boasts a 28 page booklet and rare photos.
Roots, Rock, Remixed CD - Bob Marley and The Wailers

Roots, Rock, Remixed CD - Bob Marley and The Wailers

While a lot of bootleg remixes of these songs exist every song is from the legendary Lee Perry-produced Black Ark days Roots, Rock, Remixed is the first remix album to receive a certified blessing from the Marley family and Chris Blackwell, himself, who stated, Roots, Rock, Remixed retains the songs and the spirit of the original Wailers' recordings and creates a great dance party record.

We thought there was a lack of quality Bob Marley remixes for the underground, says David Hargis, co-producer and VP of A&R at rockr music, which spearheaded this project. There have been a few high profile, mass market projects, but we wanted to present something for dance club audiences. There's a lot of warmth and humanity in these songs. None sound too electronic or far from the analog originals. Everyone who worked on this project had deep respect for the music.

Yet, those drum beats and bass lines are completely new - the studio refurbishing of skilled hands and ears. Cordovan's hip-hop slick-kick adds punch to the sing-along One Love, while Afrodisiac Sound System takes 'Soul Shakedown Party' from ghetto blaster to mega club experience. Jimpster's excellent retelling of 400 Years, considered crucial in the Peter Tosh library, makes this song of rebellion available for the four-on-the-floor audience. Through and through, the Wailers shine in every moment.

We're honored to work with such an important body of music, says Jeff Daniel, the album's co-producer and rockr music's chief. 'Marley's sound was like no other and his indelible stamp can be heard all through these great new remixes. We took great care not to disrespect his legend.

There's a really nice balance between those that stick to the roots, and the ones that create their own interpretations, says Bruno Guez, President of Quango Records. Adding to the sentiment, Hargis continues, Some of the remixers stuck with the familiar song structure and layered modern elements into them, while others took samples of the originals and transformed them into something completely new. It was often astounding how creative these DJs & producers were.

Originally launching Quango under Chris Blackwell's Palm Pictures years ago, Guez knows the Marley catalog inside and out. While Blackwell was pivotal in introducing the young Rasta to global ears, this project is quite circular for the groundbreaking Quango.

These are many of the seed songs for Bob,' Hargis concludes. 'He went back through his catalog and updated many of them for Island later in his career. In a sense, we're doing the same thing with these remixes. There are a lot of special songs here. Special, indeed.

1 SOUL SHAKEDOWN PARTY(AFRODISIAC SOUND SYSTEM REMIX)

2 LIVELY UP YOURSELF(BOMBAY DUB ORCHESTRA REMIX)

3 DUPPY CONQUEROR(FORT KNOX FIVE REMIX)

4 SUN IS SHINING(YES KING REMIX)

5 SOUL REBEL(AFRODISIAC SOUND SYSTEM REMIX)

6 AFRICAN HERBSMAN(KING KOOBA REMIX)

7 DON'T ROCK MY BOAT(STUHR REMIX)

8 SMALL AXE(PAUL & PRICE REMIX)

9 RAINBOW COUNTRY(DJ SPOOKY'S SUBLIMINAL FUNK REMIX)

10 TRENCHTOWN ROCK(TRIO ELETRICO REMIX)

11 400 YEARS(JIMPSTER REMIX)

12 ONE LOVE(CORDOVAN REMIX)

<img src=http://www.reggaeplanet.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/roots, rock, remixed-bob-marley-cd-sm.jpg>

Damian Marley - Mr. Marley

Damian Marley - Mr. Marley

This is Damian Marleys first CD which was released over ten years ago. The CD is finally available to purchase again.

Damian Marley a.k.a. Jr. Gong brought to life his musical heritage with "Mr. Marley", skillfully produced by brother Stephen as one of the first projects conceived by Ghetto Youths International. Amongst the outstanding tracks on this album are "Love And Inity", a vital, rhythmic song, the hard core "Old War Chant", the pulsating "Mr. Marley", and the musical introduction "Me Name Jr. Gong".

Tracklist

1) Trouble

2) Love and Inity

3) 10,000 Chariots

4) Old War Chant

5) Party Time

6) Kingston 12

7) Keep On Growing

8) Searching (So Much Bubble)

9) One More Cup of Coffee

10) Julie

11) Me Name Jr. Gong

12) Mr. Marley

Bob Marley - Exodus: 30th Anniversary CD

Bob Marley - Exodus: 30th Anniversary CD

Marley's consistent (certainly by reggae standards) album career has proffered many great songbooks, of which EXODUS is just one good example. The singles "One Love" and "Jamming" will be familiar to anyone with even a passing acquaintance with Jamaican music, but just as vital are the touchingly vulnerable love song "Waiting In Vain," the title track, and the splendid "Guiltiness." This was the first album to feature Junior Murvin on guitar, while the expressive use of horns adds new texture to the established quality of the Wailers' backing. Like most of his work, vital for a comprehensive collection.

Credits

Performer: Bob Marley & The Wailers
Engineer: Karl Pitterson
Distributor: Universal Distribution

Track Details

Disc: 1

Natural Mystic

So Much Things To Say

Guiltiness

Heathen, The

Exodus

Jamming

Waiting In Vain

Turn Your Lights Down Low

Three Little Birds

One Love / People Get Ready

Jamming - (long version, bonus track)

Punky Reggae Party - (long version, bonus track)
